John F. Kennedy International Airport was first opened in 1948, intended to ease the flow of passengers at LaGuardia Airport some 10 miles away.
Its original proposed name was Idlewild Airport, as it was built on the grounds of the Idlewild Beach Golf Course.
Officially titled ‘New York International Airport’, the airport was popularly known as ‘Idlewild’ and the first airline flight left on July 1 1948.
After the assassination of John F. Kennedy in 1963, it was renamed in his honor and the name has stuck ever since.
