First-Time Off-Airport Parking: What to Expect
By ParkON Team | Last updated: April 2026
Off-airport parking saves real money — but if you've never used it, the process can feel like a gamble. Will the shuttle actually come? Will my car be safe? What do I show at the gate? This guide walks you through an off-airport parking trip end to end so there are no surprises. Nothing mysterious happens: you book online, drive to the lot, hand off (or self-park) your car, take a short free shuttle to the terminal, and reverse the process on return. When you're ready to book, ParkON lets you compare off-airport lots at your airport and reserve in under two minutes.

What Off-Airport Parking Actually Is
Off-airport parking lots are independent facilities located near the airport — usually within a few miles — that offer secure parking plus a free shuttle to the terminals. They exist because on-airport garages fill up and charge a premium for proximity; off-airport lots trade a 5–15 minute shuttle ride for meaningfully lower daily rates, often 40–60% below airport rates.
They come in two broad styles:
- Dedicated parking operators — facilities built specifically for airport parking, with fenced lots, 24/7 staff, CCTV, and frequent shuttles. Examples include brands like WallyPark, The Parking Spot, Jiffy, Blue Sky, and many local independents.
- Airport-area hotels — hotels near major airports that sell unused parking capacity to travelers, often with shuttle service they already run for guests. Sometimes slightly less frequent shuttles, but the lots are well-lit and monitored.
Step 1: Booking Your Spot
Reserving online is almost always cheaper than driving up without a reservation, and it guarantees there will be a space waiting — especially important around holidays when lots fill up days in advance.
- Go to the ParkON home page and enter your airport, arrival date/time, and return date/time. Exact times matter because billing is per day plus a 1–2 hour grace period.
- Compare results. Each lot card shows the daily rate, distance from the airport, shuttle schedule, and any amenities (valet, covered, EV charging, etc.).
- Open a lot's detail page to read recent traveler reviews — the most useful signal for first-timers is whether the shuttle is reliable and the check-in is smooth.
- Reserve. You'll usually pay a small deposit upfront and settle the balance at the lot, or occasionally pay the full amount upfront. You'll get a confirmation email with a QR code or reservation number — save it to your phone.
Step 2: Arriving at the Lot
ParkON recommends arriving at your lot at least 30 minutes before you'd like to be inside the terminal. That's enough time for check-in, loading luggage on the shuttle, the drive to the airport, and the unload at your terminal curb. On holidays or at very large lots, give yourself 45 minutes.
At the Entry Gate
Most lots have a ticket dispenser or a staffed entry. Pull a ticket or show your reservation confirmation — whatever the signage directs. The gate arm rises and you drive in.
Self-Park vs. Valet
- Self-park. You drive to an open spot, park, grab your luggage, and walk (or ride the in-lot shuttle) to the check-in hut. At the check-in, show your reservation and hand over any documents the lot requires. Some lots want to hold your keys, some don't — it's lot-specific and called out on the ParkON lot detail page.
- Valet. You pull up to a covered drop-off area, get out with your luggage, and an attendant takes the keys. You present your reservation, sign a brief intake form, and board the shuttle. Valet is typically a few dollars more per day but saves time and walking.
What You'll Be Asked For
- Reservation confirmation (QR code or number)
- A photo ID
- Return flight info (sometimes) so the lot can anticipate when you'll need pickup
- A credit card on file (for the final balance or any add-ons like a car wash)
Step 3: The Shuttle to the Terminal
Shuttle service is included in every off-airport reservation. Here's what to expect:
- Frequency: busy lots run shuttles every 5–10 minutes; smaller lots every 15–30 minutes or on demand. The ParkON lot detail page lists the schedule.
- Luggage: drivers load bags into the luggage area. A small cash tip per bag is customary but not required.
- Ride time: 5–15 minutes to the airport depending on lot location and how many terminals the shuttle serves.
- Drop-off: the driver announces each terminal and drops passengers at the departure-level curb. Make sure you know your airline's terminal ahead of time.
Step 4: While You're Away
You don't need to do anything during your trip — the lot watches the car. Typical behind-the-scenes activity:
- 24/7 staffing so someone can respond if an alarm goes off.
- Perimeter and interior CCTV coverage with recorded footage.
- Lights on overnight; periodic foot patrols at many lots.
- Optional paid services (car wash, detailing, oil change at some lots). You book these at drop-off, not afterward.
Step 5: Coming Back
At the Airport
Once you've landed and collected luggage, head to the designated airport-shuttle pickup area. At large airports this is usually on the lower (arrivals) level, on an island labeled for private / off-airport shuttles. Each shuttle's destination is printed on the side and roof of the vehicle. If it's your lot's shuttle, flag the driver and board.
If you don't see your shuttle within 15–20 minutes, call the lot. Pickup loops run on a fixed schedule and occasional delays (traffic, ground stops at the airport) happen.
At the Lot
- Valet return: present your reservation/ticket; the attendant brings the car from the storage area (typically 2–5 minutes). Pay any remaining balance or add-on services.
- Self-park return: walk (or take the in-lot shuttle) to your car, drive to the exit, hand in your ticket, pay any balance, and drive off.
- Long-stay or late return: if you're returning later than your reservation end time, you'll settle the extra days at the gate at the lot's posted daily rate.
Common First-Timer Worries
"Will my car actually be safe?"
Reputable off-airport lots are fenced, gated, and have 24/7 CCTV and staff. They're often safer than city street parking — and certainly safer than home if you're in an area where unattended driveways advertise "nobody home." Read the recent reviews for any lot you're considering; they're the best signal of actual day-to-day experience.
"What if the shuttle doesn't come?"
The lot's shuttle runs on a schedule and the drivers know when regular pickup windows are. Every ParkON-partnered lot staffs a phone line; if your shuttle is late on pickup, you call and they dispatch one. In the rare event of a service failure, ParkON support can help arbitrate — keep the reservation email and receipt.
"What if my flight is delayed?"
Most lots are flexible about on-departure delays — just call if you'll be dramatically late to your drop-off. On return, if your flight is delayed or cancelled and you come back on a different day, the lot continues holding the car; you'll pay the extra days at the gate. See Parking & Flight Delays for the full process.
"What if I need to cancel?"
Most ParkON reservations can be cancelled for a full refund up to 24 hours before your scheduled arrival. Cancellations inside 24 hours are refunded minus the service fee. After your scheduled arrival time, no refund is available. A small number of lots (notably The Parking Spot locations) are non-refundable. See cancellation details for the full policy.
"Do I tip?"
Tipping is appreciated but not required. A small cash tip per bag for the shuttle driver who loads your luggage is customary. At valet lots, a small tip to the attendant retrieving your car on return is also typical.
"What about my keys?"
Self-park lots generally do not hold keys. Valet lots do — the attendant stores them in a secure cabinet and retrieves your car when you return. If your car has a smart key, bring both fobs with you and hand over only one (keeping the other in your own bag), which prevents accidental drain of either fob and means you're never without a backup.
